Foster 40-80 Disinfectant and Coronavirus Disease 2019, COVID-19 (SARS-CoV-2)

Foster 40-80 First Defense Disinfectant has demonstracted effectiveness against viruses similar to coronavirus disease 2019 on hard, non-porous surfaces. Therefore, 40-80 can be used to fight COVID-19 when used in accordance with the directions for use against Norovirus on hard, non-porous surfaces.

Foster 40-80 First Defense Disinfectant is used in hospitals on hard, non-porous surfaces. The label states the product is effective against both Norovirus and human coronavirus. Users must follow the directions provided on the label when applying this and any disinfectant product. Refer to the product label for more information related to uses, contact times, and environmental surfaces.


Foster® First DefenseTM Disinfectant (40-80) is a convenient, ready-to-use EPA Registered formulation that kills odor-causing bacteria and inhibits the growth of mold and mildew. This all-in-one “disinfectant, cleaner, fungicide, mildewstat, germicide and deodorizer” is designed for use in water damage restoration and for clean-up of mold and microbe impacted porous and non-porous materials. For homes, hospitals, institutions and industrial use.

First Defense Disinfectant kills household germs and is effective against a broad spectrum of bacteria, including Pseudomonas Aeruginosa (Pseudomonas), Staphylococcus Aureus (Staph), and Streptococcus Pyogenes (Strep), is virucidal*, and inhibits the growth of mold and mildew (fungicidal), including Trichophyton Mentagophytes, when used as directed.

First Defense Disinfectant is effective against odor-causing bacteria and fungi (in water damager restoration situations) on semi-porous and porous materials including carpets, carpet cushion, sub floors, drywall, trim and frame lumber. It helps clean and remove residue resulting from flood and water damage.

First Defense Disinfectant may also be used to disinfectant washable hard, non-porous surfaces such as tables, floors, walls, countertops, coils and drain pans of air conditioning and refrigeration equipment and heat pumps and hard, non-porous surfaces such as metal, stainless steel, fiberglass (shower stalls and sinks), finished woodwork, vinyl or plastic upholstery, as well as hard non-porous inanimate environmental surfaces found in hospitals, food processing areas, homes, restaurants, hotels, health clubs and spas.

LIMITATIONS: Do not store or apply to surfaces below 32ºF (0ºC) or above 100ºF (38ºC).

Dymax and Rudolph Bros. & Co Announce Sales Partnership

Touching-Up Conversion Coatings

When it comes to the importance of conversion coatings, the aerospace industry and the military know corrosion is their enemy.  One of the best ways to prevent it and aid in the adhesion of adhesives and coatings is with conversion coatings.  Some difficulty exists when applying conversion coatings to small areas, especially in MRO operations.  That's where our Henkel Aerospace Touch-N-Prep pens come in.

Two conversion coatings are availabe in our convenient, ready to use, Touch-N-Prep pen packaging.  The Alodine 1132 is the hex-chrome option and the Alodine 871 is a tri-chrome.  The Touch-N-Prep pen is designed to save lavor, material, and time when applying a dry-in-place military specification approved conversion coating.

Release Agents for...almost Everything

Industrial processes and methods of manufacturing have evolved over the decades, but one thing hasn't changed when it comes to molding.  You need your parts to release from the mold.  Sticking is B-A-D!!

The release agent needs to not only make sure parts don't stick, it also needs to provide the desired surface finish without cosmetic or structural flaws.  Structural flaws like nit lines and adhesion to metal issues can result in parts being rejected.  Poor surface finish on parts can require extra finishing work or cause them to be rejected.

The Effects of Weather on Adhesives and Sealants

Recent weather conditions have brought us hot humid days well ahead of our "normal weather" for this time of year.  These hot, humid conditions will affect 2-part and 1-part adhesives and sealants.  Here are a few reminders to help you with your manufacturing / assembly processes.

2-Parts:  These adhesives cure due to a chemical reaction between the 2 components.  As the temperature rises in your facility or out in the field (service work and field repairs), the open time, working time, gel time, and cure time are all accelerated.  The general rule of thumb is that these times are cut in half for every 10°C/18°F increase in temperature above 24°C/75°F.

If your 2-part is a polyurethane, you should be taking extra care to protect the moisture sensitive material.  Purging containers after opening them before re-closing them with an inert gas that is heavier than air like nitrogen or argon will help you maximize your shelf life.  Moisture exposure can cause bubbles to form.  You should also make sure any desiccant dryers are changed as needed.

1-Parts:  These moisture curing adhesive sealants will benefit from the additional humidity by curing faster.  That means they will also skin over more quickly.  Make sure you're getting parts assembled before this skin develops to get good adhesion.  If you're using 1-part polyurethanes, you'll need to make sure you purge containers before re-closing them with dry nitrogen or argon to maximize their shelf life.  You may also notice dispense heads clogging due to this accelerated skinning.

The Effects of Weather on Your Resin Systems

It's that magical time of year where snow melts, temperatures warm, and flowers bloom.'s supposed to be.  On the way to the season of warmer days, we often suffer through wet cool conditions.  It's Spring!  It affects us all, but the extremes seem to be magnified here in the Midwest and in the northern regions of the country.

This time of year calls from some true diligence in managing our use of sealants, adhesives, resins, and tapes:

     One part moisture curing products will actually cure faster as heaters are turned off and humidity levels rise.

     Two part adhesives will vary in cure speed as cool mornings slow down the cure process and warmer afternoons accelerate it.

     Resin systems, get coats and fiberglass resin systems, will need to have their gel times checked and ratios adjusted.

     Tapes will have less tack in cool mornings and poor adhesion to parts with condensation on them.

Don't forget your molds!  Those cool wet temperatures can wreak havoc on how your mold release performs if you're molding fiberglass.  Mold temps need to be above 60° or you'll likely have sticking issues.  If you have condensation on your will be worse!!!

For all the joy that Spring brings to us in the cold northern half of the country, don't forget to be attentive to the temperature and humidity levels of your production areas and your materials.  If you don't, there will be no joy in your Spring.

Crystic Mouldguard is a tough temporary coating specially designed for protecting moulds and mouldings. Often, decommissioned moulds are stored outside where they are subjected to standing water, UV light, dirt and frost and can become damaged or scratched. Many hours are usually wasted repairing moulds, cleaning and polishing the gelcoat surface ready for re-use. Longterm Storage

Moulds can be covered with Crystic Mouldguard and left outside for long periods of time. The mould shown below had been left outside for 6 months before Crystic Mouldguard was removed very easily revealing a mould surface in excellent condition.

Tesa Tape Soluitons for Elevators

There are many opportunities to utilize Tesa tapes for replacement of liquid contact adhesives in panel production for elevators.  According to Richard King, Tesa Specialist, these applicaitons include full tape lamination and tape strip lamination of materials to substrates to cladding of elevator doors.  The elevator OEM's have been using Tesa tape for decades.

As the aesthetics of elevators have changed, so to have the materials and bonding solutions. Tesa is on the front of this evolution and can assist with the development of these products.

An important factor in modern day building construction is the use of "green" products.  Most customers are interested in “green” products that will enable them to get LEED’s certification.  Tesa has provided an official letter regarding this on several of their tapes, and they have a specific piece of literature for elevator manufacturing.  If you don’t have an elevator application, much of this would also apply to architectural cladding applications.
